Product Description

A fast-paced literary puzzler, Dominance is “an academic mystery that gleefully illustrates the dangers of losing yourself in a book” (The New York Times Book Review).Fifteen years ago, Alex Shipley was part of a special night class taught by Richard Aldiss, a re-nowned literature professor— and convicted murderer. Lecturing the group of nine hand-picked students from a video feed in his prison cell, the professor spoke only of one novel by a famously reclusive author, and he challenged the class to solve the mystery of that writer’s identity once and for all. Today, Alex is a Harvard professor who made her name as a member of that class, and as the woman who helped set Richard Aldiss free. But when one of her fellow alums is murdered, can she use what she learned from Aldiss to stop a killer—before each of the night class students is picked off, one by one?

First let me say that I am not a literary scholar, nor a professional book reviewer, but merely a person who enjoys reading a good book. I had previously read Will Lavender's first novel, OBEDIENCE, and I purchased DOMINANCE with the expectation that it would be similar to the former - a pretty good novel fitting for a quick read while sitting on the beach. I was wrong. DOMINANCE was far more than just a good beach read. Rather than being a book that I could pick up, read a few pages between dips in the ocean, then put right back down again, it was a book that hooked me and wouldn't let go. I was forced to forgo a couple days of beach lounging just so I could continue this dual mystery of past and present. In DOMINANCE, Lavender brings the characters to life and created imagery that made it seem as if I were walking right along with the Shipley, Keller and the other students of the night class. In my mind's eye I could see what the characters saw, hear the creak of old wooden floors as they walked the halls of the old mansion, feel the cold as it bit their faces when they stepped out into the Vermont winter air and feel the fear when they looked upon a convicted killer displayed on their classroom TV. The flow of the story(s) is smooth, without the dull moments some novels have while setting up the plot. For those who have read both of Lavender's novels, the author's progression from the first novel to second is evident. OBEDIENCE was a good novel. DOMINANCE takes it up a notch. I eagerly await a third novel.
